Casablanca Sustainable Market Square implements multiple elements of sustainability. Every element is to supplement each other, creating a small social and environmental circular relationship – the market square.

The general understanding of the complex Islamic world of geometric star-and-polygon patterns, the girih tiles, was believed to be created by merely using a straightedge and a compass. However, recent studies have discovered that it was based on a decagonal and quasi-crystalline advanced mathematical understand

Large tree like structures cover the project site, protecting the market square from the climate, providing optimal conditions for market activity during the day, and restaurant and cafe activity in the night. In daytime they adapt with levels of transparency to control the amount sunlight in the market area. At night, the canopy turns completely transparent, revealing the wooden structure.

This understanding is the foundation of our architectural concept. It is developed by using the girih tiles as a design method, that elevates its purpose from pure ornamentation, to a method of developing volumetric composition, spatial organization, structural elements, integration of sustainable technology and strategies, and planning the flow of people. The result is a contemporary and technologically advanced design, rooted in a strong regional architectural history.
